Contains bonus second album with Earth Rot's instrumentals, never before released. Contains 28 page booklet with photos and interview. Having really liked Axelrod’s arrangements from his instrumental records Songs of Experience, Songs of Innocence and Seriously Deep, I checked out Earth Rot a few years back and was turned off by the choral vocals. I didn’t get it and I didn’t bother to find out what they were talking about, I had just been hoping for more of his instrumental arrangement work. And finding the Earth Rot lp on vinyl was a pricy proposition as well. When I saw the title in the Record Store Day list I looked into it again, This time read the lyrics.

Born in Los Angeles, California, David Axelrod was raised in its South Central neighborhood, where he grew up listening to R&B and jazz. His father was active in radical labour union politics. His third solo album, Earth Rot (1970), warned of the impact of environmental pollution and degradation. At the same time, Axelrod continued to work with Adderley and Rawls, and with the South African singer Letta Mbulu, bandleader David Rose, and unsuccessful psychedelic groups The Common People and Hardwater.

After the sublime excess of his two takes on William Blake, with Song of Innocence and Songs of Experience, David Axelrod went bonkers and issued the single weirdest record of his career that stands pretty much unparalleled more than 30 years later. Earth Rot is in effect a cantata for the planet, or, in Axe's own words "contemporary music with ancient yet timely words set to the theme of ecology. Those ancient yet timely words come from the book of Isaiah in the Bible and for a Navajo legend called "Song of the Earth Spirit

Does anyone else think their copy's artwork is very dark, compared to the photos added on this release and the original artwork?
Tcaruieb
the copy I picked up is a terrible pressing, not sure if they are all this way... Lots of surface noise, pops and crackling. Intermittent on sides A/B and present throughout sides C/D. Absolutely ruins the listening experience for this grail. Huge disappointment as the first two in this series sound great.

It’s written from the perspective of the Earth spirit, basically saying, fine, if you humans want to trash the place, not pay attention to the consequences and end up serving your own demise, that’s not a problem because the earth will heal itself and be better off without you anyway. What is really cool about this particular reissue is that it’s a 2 lp set, with the additional record being instrumental versions of the original. And these aren't just the original tracks minus the vocals, they are different takes with instrumental solos in place of the choral story tellers. If you are into Axelrod, it's a nice score.

wicked release. wish they had re-printed the original inner bag with the gas mask (a la Tim Buckley's 'Greetings From L.A.')
Taun
Yeah this is a real shame, is the original inner sleeve specific just to this record, or did it appear as an inner sleeve on any other capitol releases? Was thinking of selling my original copy but now having second thoughts because of this!!
Nuadazius
Sadly, United pressed this and screwed it up, with side B being quite off-center. Fortunately, Now-Again is helping me with this, but United is absolutely incompetent to an alarming degree
Gavirim
Mine is jacked up too, B is off-center and hole is not cut properly.
Landarn
With my copy the label for side B is a little off center but the vinyl disc and grooves themselves are centered correctly.
Ustamya
I have no original to compare this to, but this pressing sounds amazing just like the last two reissues on Now-Again. They've done us a great service by remastering and re-releasing these masterpieces!

Earth Rot is getting a repress to be released on November 23, 2018. Not sure how legit this is going to be, but maybe this will be an official repress.
Weiehan
rendezvous65 , mrlimbo: this release is actually as legit as they can come. The Now-Again label is responsible for this one, and if you have been able to get your hands on the other two reissues from Axelrod's "Capitol Trilogy" you know that there is very little to worry about as far how official the release is. From the Rappcats website:"This reissue is a gatefold 2/LP containing a bonus second album with Earth Rot’s instrumentals, never before released, and an oversized, 28p. booklet that delves into Axelrod’s incredible life and music, replete with never before published photos and an interview with Axelrod by Eothen Alapatt and Waxpoetic’s Brian Digenti. Audiophile reissue, lacquered directly from Axelrod’s original master tapes at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster." (source: http://www.rappcats.com/shop/earth-rot/)In my opinion, outside of the original pressing, this will be the definitive version to own.
Anayalore
Yes its a RSD BF release , so who knows how legit that will be ?
Na
I am well pleased with the sound of this pressing :)
SadLendy
How or why tf was this declared a bootleg, smh
Morlunn
Scorpio is notorious for bootlegging; so that's probably why someone submitted that
Meztihn
Not a clue either. I wouldn't call Scorpio the best reissue company in the world but they are ok. To call them bootlegs is laughable when 4 Men and Akarma albums are still available through Discogs. The mind boggles...
Hiclerlsi
No clue. The Axelrod reissues by Scorpio are legit in sound and copyright. This unofficial/bootleg shenanigans has gotten waaay outta hand
Ximathewi
do you know if this 2000 repress has a gatefold cover?
Elildelm
Hi, my 2000 reissue comes with gatefold cover
DEAD-SHOT
It almost feels sacreligious to comment on any of Axelrod's capitol masterpieces, but the third in the trilogy it is the most misunderstood. There are lyrics sung by a choir unlike the first two which are entirely instrumental. However the production is so steller, the story it tells so gripping, it requires the most thorough listen to attain its sweet rewarding fruits. Do not sleep on this one. By the way the original inner sleeve with the gas-mask man is just two sweet.
